Using eBay As a Research Tool to Price
Inexpensive Cars, Trucks, and SUV's

When it comes to buying or even selling a $1000 dollar or less auto, the difference between getting a good deal and a great deal is all in the research.  Many of the cars on www.1000DollarAutos.com are actually greatly under-valued, but in order to realize this we need to do some comparison shopping and learn more about our potential purchase.

In my years of experience buying and selling cars for $1k or less, the most important task I needed to do with every vehicle was determine the MARKET value of the vehicle. Lots of people love to sit and talk about how much blue book value their car holds, but in reality most cars tend to actually sell for far less or in some cases far more than their "book" value.  To the smart buyers and sellers what’s really important is knowing the "market" value of a vehicle or in other words what people are actually paying for this vehicle.

A perfect example that I am seeing often today is the sharp increase in the market value of the gas savers.  Cars like the Ford Fiesta and Geo Metros once traded hands for prices more suited to a case of beer, but today with $4.00 per gallon gas I see some of these formerly unloved shoe boxes going for several times their supposed "book" value.  So to the novice cheap car buyer the question is "How can I figure out the market value?"  Today the answer is as simple as going to eBay.

eBay has a unique bidding format which in turn allows us to see not just what people are asking for a vehicle or parts, but what they are actually selling for.  Anybody looking to part a car for cash or find a super sweet deal, can use eBay to find many of the answers to their research questions.  Not only can you find a good estimate of the value for vehicles and parts, but you can also see the availability certain vehicles and parts.  A common reason many would sell a vehicle that’s in good looking shape for only a few hundred bucks might be because of a major engine failure.  A smart buyer can now easily use eBay to determine the cost and availability of a replacement engine.  Now to most people the phrase "engine replacement" tends to go hand and hand with "car replacement", because they are for one reason or another simply unwilling to make the repair.  I think if most people would simply take the time to look at the prices of used or even rebuilt engines for their vehicle on eBay they would find some of them to be surprisingly low.

In fact some parts are so abundant and easily available that one can really take their time to pick and choose the absolute best condition replacement.  In other cases some parts are surprisingly hard to come by or so overpriced at the dealership that even used ones fetch a very high value, which is great if you intend to part out a vehicle.

No matter what your purpose is for buying a vehicle especially a $1k or less auto, from personal experience I strongly recommend that you browse around a little on eBay to do some research.  One thing to keep in mind is that there are a lot of factors that can lead to the market value of a vehicle or parts so, just because you saw one 1991 Honda Accord go a for a certain price doesn't mean that yours will necessarily do the same.  The condition, location, availability, time of year, amount of interested buyers, and the list goes on… can all be contributing factors to the "market" value of a vehicle.  So in your search to find that great deal on www.1000DollarAutos.com, remember that you have tools like eBay at your fingertips as well and using these tools properly makes finding a great deal that much easier.
